A Guide to Blogging for The Voices Project

As a leading organization dedicated to transforming the lives of low-income women, the Crittenton Women’s Union wishes to guide social change so that all women of the Commonwealth can discover opportunity and prosperity. We understand that in order to meet this goal, we must foster a conversation on this issue that is compelling, innovative, and provocative. Furthermore, we understand that embracing contemporary communication trends and technology is necessary for success.

Over the last few years, the internet has changed from a one-way communication channel to a place where everyone can have a voice. Perhaps the most significant example of this change is the rise in popularity of the web log. A weblog, or blog, is a web-based editorial that allows readers to respond to the author. A blog can have many authors, making it an efficient and easy tool for fostering the kind of conversation described above.

Therefore, the CWU has launched “The Voices Project,” a blog on the theme of women’s economic self-sufficiency. “The Voices Project” will include the voices of individuals from a wide spectrum of backgrounds who, together, can generate public policy agendas that work for the low-income woman. Remember, this is your opportunity to voice your opinion and make a difference.

Basic Posting Guidelines:

  • Write on behalf of yourself. This blog is about individual interactions, not corporate communications. CWU blog authors and commentators are personally responsible for their posts. Also, if you quote somebody else, make sure to give him or her credit and provide a link to their work if possible.
  • Keep it short and sweet. Most blog articles and comments need not be long memoirs. Instead, try to get to your point quickly and accurately by being as descriptive and straightforward as possible. 150 to 300 words is plenty for a blog post. (Click here to see examples of how posts with that many words may look.) However, always feel free to write more or less if your subject requires.
  • Respect your audience. Please don't use ethnic slurs, personal insults, obscenity, etc., and show proper consideration for others' privacy and for topics that may be considered objectionable or inflammatory.
  • Get your facts straight. If you are blogging outside your area of expertise, contact someone or find another resource that can factually back up your argument. Again, if you use somebody else’s research or ideas, make sure to give them credit by citing their work.
  • If you are not comfortable with your writing, click here for some helpful tips.
