Big Question of the Month
Big Question of the Month has begun! We encourage all visitors to use this tool in order to help us continue to focus on the most important issues in the advocacy department at Crittenton Women's Union. The answers we get are important tools in helping us to generate new ideas on how to break down barriers to gain economic self-sufficiency for low-income women.
This Month's Question:
What kind of help do you wish you could get from the government to reach your educational goals? If you have reached your goals already, what helped you to get to where you are today?
Please submit a comment in response to this question. Thanks for your continuing support and input.

I sincerely wish there were some link between corporate america and helping to get people off assistance. Could not some companies contact some place like the Crittenton Women's Union and ask to have a few candidates sent over who are trying to get off assistance. If a number of companies would each take on a few people and overlook resume gaps and time spent out of work and give them a chance it would be a great program. Coming off of assistance and getting a job, feels similar to getting out of prison and finding a job. Where are the companies willing to take a chance on people? I really wish someone would hire me who actually knows I have a disability, but that I have worked so hard to fight it and I am the better for the work I have done. I just cannot talk about it and therefor, my interview process is difficult. I just want a positive atmosphere to work in where I can work and get off assistance. Someone please hire me. I am worth the chance. I am honest, personable and smart.

I think if the information on government grants were eaiser for individuals to access, and more available that people would be willing and able to further their education.

More assistance! With student loan interest rates so high, paying for higher education is increasingly difficult. So, I think the government must lower interest rates. The government should also offer more childcare assistance for families with young children. Many young women (and men) are putting off college after having a child because childcare is so expensive. There must be more support for families with young children so they don’t have to wait until their child is in school before taking up their dreams again.

I enrolled in Bryman Institute on November 22, 2006 and had to drop out in January of 2007 because I could not afford the payments. I qualified for financial aid but everyone knows noone actually qualifys for the whole amount. So I was left with a balance. Between savings, transportation, cell phone bill, storage bill, child care and personal expenses I could not afford it. So I think I would want the Government to help me by providing more grants and scholarships for low income women. I also believe I should have received some kind of stipend due to the fact that I had to choose between work or school, I could not do both at the same time. "More options would be nice".
